Social Events
For members of our Group we also include social activities throughout the year. With almost 1,000 members we recognise that we come from different communities, walk on different days of the week so there is a need for us to get together and meet in a social environment.
The biggest social event of the year is our Annual General Meeting which normally takes place in November, last year on 21 November. It is not a dull, dry affair. In the morning there was a 3 mile walk led by a volunteer with all participants returning to the AGM venue. Inside the hall were stalls of craft items, made by members, as well as used maps, walking gear and books for sale. Then a soup and sandwich lunch was served before the business of the AGM itself began. Often there is a guest speaker after the formal proceedings and last year the topic was the South Downs as the newest National Park. And then it was time for tea and cakes! With all this informality and interaction there was plenty of time to renew friendships and exchange news.
Older members may have hung up their boots but they like to keep in touch. The quarterly newsletter is sent to all members but a couple of older members' tea parties were held to celebrate birthdays or simply to have a good time!
A more recent addition to the social calendar has been the fish and chips quiz night which seems to have caught on rather quickly. So far, this has been an annual event to keep spirits up in the winter months and we expect it to be well supported again this year.
As 2010 is our 60th anniversary year we held a special birthday lunch party in March which was attended by the Mayoress of Croydon, as our guest. And we are looking forward to our first barn dance in September.
And if this is not enough then we can look back, or forward, to some good walking holidays in the Isle of Wight, Kerry, the Forest of Dean, and New England.
Many of our holidays are organised through Ramblers Holidays
But you do not have to be
a member of the Ramblers to book a holiday with them so please feel free to use
this link to organise your own trip.
